Marco Miglioli

Poco después de obtener mi título de arquitecto en la Accademia di Architettura de Mendrisio (USI), bajo la dirección de los profesores Peter Zumthor y Mario Botta, comencé a interesarme profundamente por la relación entre la luz y el espacio construido, y por cómo la iluminación puede transformar la percepción y generar emoción.

Durante mis años universitarios viví dos años en España, donde trabajé como iluminador y escenógrafo para la compañía teatral La Fura dels Baus y como arquitecto en el estudio Mias Arquitectes.
Tras finalizar la universidad y regresar a Milán, profundicé en el campo de la iluminación: primero en el ámbito teatral, colaborando con Marco Filibeck, entonces diseñador de luces del Teatro alla Scala, y posteriormente, paralelamente a mi actividad profesional independiente, durante doce años con el estudio Ferrara Palladino Lightscape, donde participé en importantes proyectos de iluminación arquitectónica.

Mi formación, por tanto, combina un uso artístico y escenográfico de la luz con un enfoque técnico y científico, dos dimensiones que siempre he intentado integrar desde mis primeros trabajos.

He formado parte de jurados de evaluación de proyectos de iluminación relacionados con el patrimonio histórico y artístico, y he sido “Merit Judge” para los IES Awards.
Soy miembro asesor del Comité de Iluminación para Museos y Galerías de Arte de la IES, y miembro de la División 3 del Comité Nacional de la CIE (Commission Internationale de l’Éclairage).

ArchiLight Studio

Marco Miglioli ArchiLight Studio nació en 2023 como una evolución del estudio de arquitectura e iluminación “Marco Miglioli”, fundado en 2012, y fruto de la colaboración con diseñadores, artistas e investigadores.
El trabajo desarrollado en el estudio busca reforzar los vínculos entre arte, teatro, arquitectura y ciencias naturales, fusionándolos tanto a través de un uso artístico y escenográfico como técnico de la luz.
La iluminación del paisaje humanizado (desde el edificio y el parque hasta la obra de arte o la instalación) surge del vínculo profundo con el lugar y de la responsabilidad hacia el objeto iluminado.

Iluminar una arquitectura (desde grandes infraestructuras hasta pequeños espacios domésticos) o una obra significa, para nosotros, actuar en distintos niveles interconectados:

  • Interpretar el espacio y el paisaje, contar una historia que trascienda el mero objeto construido, sugerir emociones, y por tanto elegir qué poner en luz y qué dejar en sombra;
  • Proteger el patrimonio cultural de un uso inadecuado de la luz y, al mismo tiempo, valorizar el contexto local y cultural;
  • Favorecer el bienestar del individuo y preservar la biodiversidad a través de la luz;
  • Sensibilizar, mediante nuestros proyectos, sobre un uso responsable y social de la iluminación.

Como parte de este enfoque, uno de los pilares del trabajo del estudio es la investigación en el campo de la iluminación, explorando nuevas fronteras (como la fosforescencia y la bioluminiscencia) para desarrollar sistemas de iluminación sostenibles, accesibles y renovables.
Otras líneas de investigación incluyen la respuesta del cuerpo humano a los estímulos luminosos (ritmos circadianos o cambios perceptivos vinculados al envejecimiento o a déficits visuales); estrategias para evitar desequilibrios en los ecosistemas naturales (estudios sobre el espectro de la luz en relación con la fauna y la flora locales); y métodos para mitigar los daños lumínicos en obras de arte y artefactos históricos y artísticos (edificios y monumentos).

It can be made in just a few hours ⏱️, even by non-specialists, using easily available materials — which means it can also offer opportunities for social inclusion and empowerment among displaced communities. It can of course be used individually or combined with others to illuminate larger areas. ✨ “As humanitarian needs constantly grow and resources shrink,” - reads the award motivation - the lamp combines innovation with essential cost efficiency, needed to implement on a large scale […]. The simple sustainable designs make them usable in the most difficult conditions (with very limited access to technology)”. Thanks to its modularity and durability, Phluò can be applied in housing, schools, emergency medical facilities, and outdoor pathways. 🌍 The “Phluò” project is an opportunity to explore a new form of low-cost, sustainable lighting with a real-world application - not just theoretical - bringing light where it’s needed!   • 💡 Prototype of the “Phluò” phosphorescent lamp. It doesn’t need electricity to light up a small space ⚡, It shines for 12 hours 💡, It lasts for more than 25 years 🌍, And it costs only 5 euros 💶. “Phluò” is the name of the modular phosphorescent lamp prototype with which we won the competition “Application of Phosphorescence Technology for Toilet Lighting in Refugee Camps” promoted by IRC (International Rescue Committee) and Wazoku. The aim of the competition was to: “Identify sustainable and innovative solutions to make toilets for women and girls in refugee camps or settlements for internally displaced people safer and more comfortable, through the use of phosphorescent lighting.” The result was a lamp with a simple and sustainable design, which can also be used in the most difficult conditions and where access to technology is limited. 🌍 The “Phluò” project is an opportunity to explore a new form of low-cost, sustainable lighting with a real-world application - not just theoretical - bringing light where it’s needed!   • ✨ Showlight 25 ✨ A conference on theatrical lighting (and beyond), held every four years in a different city... This time, it was Dijon's turn! 🎤 “Thinks change According on how they are illuminated” On stage at Showlight 25, I shared my experience through a story that weaves together theatre and architecture. My talk focused on how architecture can change over time depending on variations in lighting, and how we might treat built spaces and artworks as if they were theatres, where light not only reveals, but guides and becomes part of the narrative, shaping tension, silence, and memory.
